Obesity‐related hypertension: Pathogenesis, cardiovascular risk, and treatment—A position paper of the The Obesity Society and the American Society of Hypertension

Abstract: In light of the worldwide epidemic of obesity, and in recognition of hypertension as a major factor in the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with obesity, The Obesity Society and The American Society of Hypertension agreed to jointly sponsor a position paper on obesity-related hypertension to be published jointly in the journals of each society. “…[GAE] per serving) and flavonoids (expressed as EC equivalents per serving) were detected in the following order red wine > green tea > black tea 3 The increasing prevalence of obesity in the U.S. population has been directly associated to the increasing rates of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or T2D 52, 55,56 . In many studies, elevated BMI is used as the main predictor of developing T2D 52 .…”

“…A series of recent reports have convincingly linked chronic inflammation as a cause as well a consequence of obesity (13)(14)(15). The chronic inflammatory state propagated by cytokines from inflammatory leukocytes (16,17) and adipokines (18,19) released from hypertrophied adipose tissue in obesity (5,20,21) may also be playing a central role in promoting carcinogenesis (10,17) as well as other oxidative stressrelated degenerative disorders including degenerative arthritis (22), atherosclerosis (23)(24)(25), and MetS (8). The link between obesity and cancer is particularly evident from the commonality of kinase signaling pathways activated downstream of cytokines in both obesity and cancer (10).…”
