Object temporal connotation

Abstract: Recent studies show that what connotes an object is first of all a certain spatio-temporal structure. In this paper we describe some of the temporal features characterizing the temporal structure of objects: pre-existence, persistence, conservation of identity in spite of perceptive discontinuity, surviving changes in colour, size, and shape. We argue that time is an indispensable attribute for every type of object and briefly discuss the implication of this view with respect to a specific neuropsychological s… Show more

“…The surface of the building prevents the object from being perceived, yet the object still exists, so that the observer expects to see it reappear. Despite the interruption in spatio-temporal continuity, the object continues to exist, pre-existing the moment of its apparition (permanence of anteriority), and persisting in time after its disappearance (permanence of posteriority; Becchio & Bertone, 2003).…”

“…When we think of time, we think of how events follow on from one another, we rarely consider that time enters in the constitution of a world of enduring entities (Becchio and Bertone, 2003). Neglect implies an impairment of temporal mechanisms, thus dramatically disclosing the link between time and ontology.…”

“…For example, spatial cues can be used to individuate objects since observing two objects next to each other indicates that the two objects are not the same [12]. Humans also use temporal cues, e.g., they assume that an object would remain the same object over the course of contiguous manipulation or observation [13]. Most importantly, such spatial and temporal cues can inform the observer that the featural differences between the objects are not due to noisy observations, but due to the two objects being different [2], [12].…”
