Objective assessment of the suture ligature method for the laparoscopic intestinal anastomosis model using a new computerized system

Abstract: Our system is useful for the quantitative assessment of suturing skill in laparoscopic surgery. We believe that this system is a useful tool for training and assessment of laparoscopic surgeons.

“…Quality of technical performance in laparoscopic suturing can be assessed using scoring systems such as checklists [18]. Other evaluation methods use motion analysis metrics [12,19] or computerized systems [20] for psychomotor skills assessment. However, studies that analyze the relationship of these motion analysis metrics with the assessment of quality in laparoscopic technical performance are scarce.…”

“…Task performance was assessed by using a computerized system for the objective assessment of the suture ligature method on a laparoscopic intestinal anastomosis model (Figure ). This system was developed and validated at Kyushu University . The system has a Suture Simulator Instruction Evaluation Unit, which uses pressure‐measuring and image‐processing devices, that is connected to an artificial intestine model.…”

“…Quantification of skill is important not only for qualifying each surgeon but also for evaluating the effectiveness of training method. We have developed a suture simulator and evaluation software (Figure 15) [56,57]. The phantom mimicking small intestine, made of four layers and string braided rubber, is used for the task.…”
