Objective Evaluation of Dysphonia: Preliminary Results of a Device Allowing Simultaneous Acoustic and Aerodynamic Measurements

Abstract: Voice quality analysis was performed in 88 normal speakers and 157 dysphonic speakers using a device that allows simultaneous study of acoustic and aerodynamic parameters during pronunciation of a sustained /a/. We compared the results with those of voice quality grading by a jury. The Mann-Whitney test showed significant differences between the grades of dysphonia for all the parameters chosen. Comparison of results (using discriminant factorial analysis) with perceptual evaluation by a jury showed concordanc… Show more

“…This parameter has always been considered decisive in voice classification by many singing teachers. Perceptual evaluation of voice quality, however, proved to be highly subjective [24] and remains controversial because of poor correlation among raters [25,26,27,28]. The pertinent study demonstrates that there exist three different female voice categories by nature.…”

“…It also serves as the gold standard for development of objective voice evaluation techniques as previously reported by several teams [1]. Ascertaining the reliability of perceptual voice analysis is of central importance in the field of voice physiology.…”

“…Enfin, l'auditeur qui évalue une dysphonie sur la partie stable du /a/ tenu ignore l'information contenue dans les transitoires. Si l'on peut considérer que la parole et la /a/ tenu contiennent chacun tous les éléments constitutifs du signal de parole (transitoires et parties stables), la partie stable du /a/ tenu contient une information tronquée: l'absence de transitoires induit un manque d'information qui doit influencer l'évaluation de l'auditeur [3].…”
