Objective Identification and Multi-Scale Controlling Factors of Extreme Heat-Wave Events in Southern China

Abstract: Southern China (SC) is often subjected to the impacts of extreme heat-wave (EHW) events with hot days covering large areas and lasting extended periods in the boreal summer. The present study explores new objective identification methods of the EHW events and reveals the controlling factors of different spatial-temporal variations in shaping the EHW events over SC from 2000 to 2017 with in-situ observations and latest reanalysis. A compound index of the EHW (with impact area, duration, and magnitude) was defin… Show more

“…On the other hand, warm horizontal temperature advection associated with the anomalous anticyclone also plays an essential role in local heat events (R. Chen & Lu, 2015; Y. Chen & Zhai, 2017; Hu et al., 2012; F. Wang et al., 2019). The intensification and westward extension of the WNPSH imposes critical effects in forming and maintaining anomalous high pressure over SC (R. Chen et al., 2019; W. Chen et al., 2020; Deng et al., 2020; W. Lin et al., 2022; Luo & Lau, 2017; W. Wang et al., 2016). R. Chen et al.…”
