Objectively Assessed Physical Activity of Preschool-Aged Children from Urban Areas

Abstract: Little is known about physical activity (PA) of preschool-age children in Poland through the course of the day. PA monitoring using an accelerometer increases the reliability of measuring daily PA levels and offers a reasonable compromise between accuracy and feasibility of measurement. The aim of the study was to determine the level of physical activity of preschool children (aged 5–6) on the basis of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) index and the number of steps. The physical activity of prescho… Show more

“…The guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement state that a sedentary lifestyle exceeding 1.5 h a day poses a risk of obesity in children aged 4 to 9 [ 25 ]. Long periods of time spent in front of the TV or computer, the use of motorized transport, poor nutrition and a lack of regular physical activity contribute to the poor physical condition of children [ 26 , 27 ]. It is stated that children aged 5 to 17 should spend 60 min a day on moderate or vigorous physical activity (MVPA) such as physical education lessons, housework, sports and games and recreational activities [ 28 ].…”

“…In a recent study conducted among Polish preschool-aged children (5-6 years) from urban areas, only 6% adhered to the aforesaid WHO recommendations. 59 There is no evidence to establish that 60 min per day of MVPA decreases the number of days with symptoms of URTIs and/or those symptoms' severity. In adults, regular moderate exercise can lead to a decreased incidence of URTIs and sedentary adults are more susceptible to infectious diseases, compared with active ones.…”

“…Parents’ optimistic view of PA engagement for themselves and family members in this study contradicts the literature reporting that Hispanic adults and children exhibit lower PA levels than other ethnic groups [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. A large percentage of children (74%) are not meeting the recommendation of 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day [ 33 ]. Our results suggest the importance of providing Hispanic parents with information regarding daily PA recommendations for adults and children and PA intensity levels to ensure that parental perceptions are aligned with the recommendations.…”
