Objectively Measured Sedentary Time, Physical Activity and Markers of Body Fat in Preschool Children

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between sedentary behavior and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), measured by accelerometry, with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference in 357 preschool children. Linear mixed models were used adjusting for race/ethnicity parental education, and preschool. Follow-up analyses were performed using quantile regression. Among boys, MVPA was positively associated with BMI z-score (β = 0.080, p = .04) but not with waist circumference; quan… Show more

“…It is necessary to emphasize that hypokinesia as a characteristic of the present lifestyle has occurred without adequate physiological adaptation during too short a period of time. This is an aggravating factor in most populations including transient and some higher social strata in developing countries [40]. All these factors along with other secular changes including inadequate nutrition have been considered for “homo sapiens” to be an unnatural situation especially during growth periods.…”

“…The results of adequate interventions and improvements of physical activity and exercise regimes as a preventive measure were reviewed recently [8, 24, 37, 40]. However, due to the life conditions, especially in large urban agglomerations, such arrangements are very difficult and require the interventions of health and pedagogic and also governmental institutions providing all groups of growing populations [34].…”

“…Accelerometry has become a commonly used and accepted measure of PA and is the preferred method over the last decade on epidemiological studies in young children. However, relatively few studies have examined the association between PA and obesity status in preschool children [13][14][15][16][17] and to the best of our knowledge, no studies have compared the compliance of daily PA recommendations and obesity status in this age group. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine compliance with current PA guidelines in Portuguese preschool children and examine the association between meeting daily PA recommendations and weight status.…”
