Objects exhibit body model like shape distortions

Abstract: Accurate knowledge about size and shape of the body derived from somatosensation is important to locate one’s own body in space. The internal representation of these body metrics (body model) has been assessed by contrasting the distortions of participants’ body estimates across two types of tasks (localization task vs. template matching task). Here, we examined to which extent this contrast is linked to the human body. We compared participants’ shape estimates of their own hand and non-corporeal objects (rake… Show more

“…Subsequent studies using this paradigm have replicated this basic pattern of results and extended them in several ways (e.g., Ferrè, Vagnoni, & Haggard, 2013;Longo, 2014Longo, , 2015bLongo & Haggard, 2012a, 2012bLongo, Long, & Haggard, 2012;Longo, Mancini, & Haggard, 2015b;Mattioni & Longo, 2014;Saulton, Dodds, Bülthoff, & de la Rosa, 2015). For example, Longo and Haggard (2012a) found that these distortions were smaller in magnitude when participants judged locations on the palmar surface of the hand.…”

“…Previous work suggests the presence of viewercentered biases and immediate vision on hand distortions in localization tasks (Longo, 2014;Saulton et al, 2015). In line with these ideas, people might also partially rely on a general form of memory (e.g.…”

“…Indeed, localization tasks distortions were not limited to the hand and appeared to generalize onto certain types of objects, particularly in the case of a rake (Saulton et al, 2015) Distortions measured on the rake item were more similar to the one found on the participant's hand than on other objects depicting square and rectangular shapes. Although the amount of distortion was significantly smaller on the rake than on the hand, it was also characterized by an overestimation of the width axis compared to a large underestimation of the length.…”
