OBSEA an oceanographic seafloor observatory

Abstract: In this paper is described the different items of a\ud subsea observatory. The control system is constantly monitoring\ud the internal and external components of the observatory\ud detecting operating faults and acting automatically in\ud consequence. It will be presented an overview of the\ud information treatment servers structure used in the OBSEA\ud project explaining the chosen topology.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

“…Finally, a test was performed in real sea conditions near the OBSEA observatory [27] off the coast of Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain. It is a controlled area in which sea conditions are monitored and measured by an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP).…”

“…Virtual collaboration among groups of researchers from different institutions or different geographic areas is fostered through the sharing of analyses and conclusions in a common web-based workspace [ 39 ]. Network sensors enable real-time access to measurements and the interactive control of remote assets [ 40 ]. An optical Ethernet network manages real-time sensor data acquisition and status monitoring (using an SNMP protocol).…”

“…In oceanographic observation, high resolution, large volumes of information and long data series are becoming increasingly important because traditional observation systems (e.g., autonomous buoys and measurements taken from vessels) present serious disadvantages regarding the costs, volume and delayed transmission of data, and face limitations of battery autonomy [ 40 ]. The newer cabled underwater observatories, in contrast, are modular, flexible and adaptable to different uses and specifications.…”

“…To perform this test part of the OBSEA infrastructure [3] located 4 km in front of Vilanova i la Geltrú coast (Barcelona) in the Mediterranean Sea has been used. OBSEA is a cabled underwater observatory with up to 3.6 kW and the high bandwidth communication link of 1 Gbps.…”
