Observation of Atomiclike Electronic Excitations in PureH3eandH

Abstract: The structure of the electronically excited states of 3 He and 4 He clusters is investigated using fluorescence excitation spectroscopy. Distinct bands are observed energetically close to atomic 1s-ns, nd, np transitions and attributed to perturbed excited He atomiclike states with different principle and orbital quantum numbers. The line shifts and widths of the bands of 3 He and 4 He clusters of the same size are different and correlate with the average particle density inside the clusters calculated using t… Show more

“…We find indications for multiple excitations and subsequent decay by Penning-like ionization when irradiating the droplets at hν = 21.6 eV which corresponds to the maximum of the 1s 2 1 S→1s2p 1 P droplet absorption band. 6,18,27 Upon ionization of He droplets at high photon energies hν 2 × E i,He we observe low-energy electrons in addition to those directly emitted, which are generated by inelastic electron-He collisions akin to excitonic satellites observed previously in PES of Ne and Ar clusters.…”

“…In particular, we anticipate perturbed atomic states, of which some have previously been identified as 3s, 3d, and 3p. 6 We see now evidence that these states reside within the surface layer. We tentatively assign band E to an n = 4 related excitation, but further evidence is required.…”

“…9 Electronic spectra simulations of a perturbed octahedron as well as an N = 25 atom-large cluster 10 were able to reproduce previously reported experimental data of small clusters. 6 Despite these efforts, we still have an incomplete picture of the electronically excited states of large helium clusters. The number of states increases dramatically with size making the computation and interpretation of the results laborious.…”
