The center of excellence (COE) titled 'The Creation of Nature-Guided Materials Processing' has been established in Nagoya University as the 21st Century COE Program supported by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In the Nature COE, various activities on the education and research are being performed through learning the laws of nature, namely, methods of attaining 'appearance of the maximum function under the minimum substance and energy consumption', which the nature and living organisms have acquired through their evolution in long period. Together with such educational programs for PhD students as research incentive, oversea training, and external evaluation programs, an 'Open-Cluster Program' was originated for promoting researches proposed by research groups consisting of young researchers in and out of the university and also for fostering them.The researches are being advanced on materials used for living bodies, mimicking structures which nature or living bodies are forming, and producing materials by mimicking processes to form the structures observed in the nature or the living bodies. In this COE, these researches are conducted by four groups to extend the processes observed in the natural world to a new type of processing, that is, thoroughly examined and rationalized by plunging a scalpel of engineering and to establish a new academic field of materials science and engineering. q

Summary: We studied the two‐dimensional (2D) microphase‐separated morphology of linear ABCD tetrablock copolymers by self‐consistent field theory. By varying the interaction parameters and the compositions, we found at least twelve structures, two of which – “four‐color” lamellae and “three‐color” core‐shell hexagonal phase – prove the existing experimental observations. These morphologies were discussed in correlation with the volume fraction of the components and the interaction parameters. A specific behavior of symmetrical tetrablock copolymers, i.e., fA = fD and fB = fC, is that the stable phases are lamellae, which is different from symmetrical ABC triblock copolymer having order‐to‐order transition. These results are helpful for the design of new block copolymer‐based nanomaterials. magnified image

Polystyrene-b-poly(4-hydroxystyrene) (SH) with narrow molecular weight distribution (M w /M n <1.1) has been successfully synthesized by living anionic polymerization technique. It was confirmed that the SH diblock copolymer with molecular weight of 27k and with volume fraction of S of 0.68 showed the definite alternative lamellar structure with domain spacing of 20.8 nm (the half pitch (HP) of 10.4 nm). Furthermore, monodisperse SHSH tetrablock copolymers with molecular weight of 27k and 23k have been also synthesized, and from these copolymers formations of lamellar structure with the HP of 5.4nm and 4.9nm, respectively, were observed by TEM and SAXS measurements. Moreover, not only the synthesis of the block copolymers by anionic polymerization in experimental lab scale up to 25 g, but a preparation of well-defined block copolymers by large-scale anionic polymerization over 3 kg was also developed.
