We theoretically investigate the propagation of bright spatial solitary waves in highly nonlocal media possessing radial symmetry in a three-dimensional cylindrical geometry. Focusing on a thermal nonlinearity, modeled by a Poisson equation, we show how the profile of the light-induced waveguide strongly depends on the extension of the nonlinear medium in the propagation direction as compared to the beamwidth. We demonstrate that self-trapped beams undergo oscillations in size, either periodically or aperiodically, depending on the input waist and power. The-usually neglected-role of the longitudinal nonlocality as well as the detrimental effect of absorptive losses are addressed.

We investigate the group velocity distribution of waveguide modes in the presence of disorder. The results are based on extensive numerical simulations of disordered optical waveguides using statistical methods. We observe that the narrowest distribution of group velocities is obtained in the presence of a small amount of disorder; therefore, the modal dispersion of an optical pulse is minimized when there is only a slight disorder in the waveguide. The absence of disorder or the presence of a large amount of disorder can result in a large modal dispersion due to the broadening of the distribution of the group velocities. We devise a metric that can be applied to the mode group index probability-density-function and predict the optimal level of disorder that results in the lowest amount of modal dispersion for short pulse propagation. Our results are important for studying the propagation of optical pulses in the linear regime, e.g., for optical communications; and the nonlinear regime for high-power short-pulse propagation. arXiv:1909.05928v2 [physics.optics]

What is the Right Theory for Anderson Localization of Light? An Experimental Test

Anderson localization of light is traditionally described in analogy to electrons in a random potential. Within this description the disorder strength -and hence the localization characteristicsdepends strongly on the wavelength of the incident light. In an alternative description in analogy to sound waves in a material with spatially fluctuating elastic moduli this is not the case. Here, we report on an experimentum crucis in order to investigate the validity of the two conflicting theories using transverse-localized optical devices. We do not find any dependence of the observed localization radii on the light wavelength. We conclude that the modulus-type description is the correct one and not the potential-type one. We corroborate this by showing that in the derivation of the traditional, potential-type theory a term in the wave equation has been tacititly neglected. In our new modulus-type theory the wave equation is exact. We check the consistency of the new theory with our data using a field-theoretical approach (nonlinear sigma model).
