Observation of one event with the characteristics of associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions

Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evalu… Show more

“…ticles in e + e − reactions [9] makes us confident in applying the approach described here to the production of the particles composed of the light SU(3) quarks (u, d, s). However the event found in the associated charm production in deep-inelastic neutrino induced reactions at CHORUS [10] may be a signal for a larger production than the evaluations based on elementary QCD processes with amplitudes proportional to α S and motivate the extension to the charmed particles of the statistical approach described here. Table I…”

“…A large statistics of ∼2000 fully neutrino-induced charmed hadron event vertices was gathered, with the outstanding reconstruction features provided by the emulsion detectors. With such events, CHORUS has been able to measure the Λ and D 0 exclusive production cross-section [57], the doublecharm production cross-section in neutral and charged current interactions [58] and the associated charm production [59].…”

“…In case that light quark can fragment into charmed hadrons, the process can manifest itself in a number of observables, such as the prompt like-sign dilepton and trimuon productions in high energy neutrino experiments [30], direct observations of two charmed hadrons in nuclear emulsion target [31], and charm production in hadron collisions [32,33]. Among these, the prompt like-sign dimuon productions have been the most seriously studied and we will use some of the data for a quantitative estimate of light quark fragmentation function and its influence on the extraction of strange asymmetry from CC charm production processes.…”
