Observation of soft x-ray transition radiation from medium energy electrons

Abstract: Soft x-rays (2 to 6 keV) have been observed from transition radiators using electrons at energies of 104 and 66 MeV. The observed spectra agree well with theory. Various stacks of mylar of 2.5, 3.5 and 6.35 μm thickness were used to produce the radiation. Optimum foil thicknesses and number were calculated and found experimentally to be correct.

“…The effect of the transverse electron coordinates ρ 0j = (x 0j , y 0j ) (j = 1, .., N) on the Fourier transformation of the charge electric field is driven by a phase factor, see Eqs. (16,17) and Eqs. (18,19).…”

“…With reference to Eqs. (16,17) and Eqs. (18,19), the charge electric field shows a dependence on the transverse electron coordinates which, under a Lorentz transformation from the laboratory to the rest reference frame, transfers and transforms in a covariant way and whose observability at a given wavelength remains unchanged, this being determined by the Lorentz-invariant scalar product of the electron transverse coordinates and the transverse components of the wave-vector.…”

“…2. There is a significantly intensive soft X-ray transition radiation (XTR) 7 , but we are not planning to use it. A dipole magnet will be placed beyond the mirror to deflect the residual electrons toward the beam dump.…”
