Observation of superradiant synchrotron radiation in the terahertz region

Abstract: We report the first high-resolution measurement of superradiance, using coherent synchrotron radiation in the terahertz region from the Canadian Light Source synchrotron and a Michelson interferometer with a nominal frequency resolution of 0:000 96 cm À1 . Superradiance arises when a high degree of phase coherence exists between the radiation fields of the individual electron bunches, and manifests itself as a series of narrow spectral peaks at harmonics of the bunch frequency. We observe an enhancement factor… Show more

“…It has provided unprecedented power in the region 0.1−1 THz, up to 4 orders of magnitude brighter than standard incoherent synchrotron radiation 10 11 . Super-Radiance effects obtained from bunch-to-bunch interference 12 further enhance specific frequencies ( 1/T bunch where T bunch is the time interval between successive bunches) of the THz CSR.…”

“…However, there are numerous demonstrations of CSR emission with synchrotron storage rings also in the THz regime [11][12][13]207]. Billinghurst et al at the Canadian Light Source report observation of superradiance at frequencies that were harmonics of the electron beam pulse train [193]. Synchrotron storage rings employ RF frequencies of 500 MHz and lower.…”

“…These days 3rd generation (synchrotron radiation storage rings) and 4th generation (linear accelerator free electron lasers) light sources represent the state-of-the-art in photon generation. The storage rings implementing low alpha mode 28 , 31 or utilizing microbunch instabilities generate intense THz radiation beams 33 . The bunch train can be treated as continuous.…”

“…Therefore, there were no problems generating radiation, however it was difficult to observe the radiation spectrum with high enough spectral resolution. A super-radiant regime was observed at Canadian light source using synchrotron radiation mechanism with a very high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer 28 and in ANKA light source in Germany 29 , however, the width of the observed lines was precisely defined by the spectrometer resolution. Recent advances in high frequency electronics drastically improved the situation.…”
