Observation of the Effects of Radially Sheared Electric Fields by the Use of a Gold Neutral Beam Probe

Abstract: Intermittent turbulent potential fluctuations in ion-cyclotron wave heated plasmas and effects of their suppression due to strongly sheared plasma rotation with electron-cyclotron heating (ECH) for potential formation are observed in GAMMA 10. Such a shear effect on the central-cell potential data is demonstrated by the use of a heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) for the first time in GAMMA 10. The HIBP system with a gold neutral beam is employed for measuring profiles of radially formed potential as well as the asso… Show more

“…The radial electric field E arising from the potential causes an E × B plasma rotation in the direction of the ion diamagnetic drift velocity, which may enhance instabilities, such as rotational flute and drift-wave modes, and degrade radial confinement. However, present studies show the suppression of low-frequency fluctuations of the density and the potential during axial confining potential formation during plug-ECH (P-ECH) [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Earlier works by Sanuki [7] and Chaudhry et al [8] discussed the effects of the ambipolar potential on the stability of drift waves.…”

“…In the tandem mirror GAMMA 10, an electrostatic potential for improving axial confinement is created by applying electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECH) in the end mirrors (plug/barrier cells) [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Two types of instability, a rotationally driven mode with the lowest azimuthal mode number and a drift-wave mode with high azimuthal mode numbers, are observed during the existence of confining potentials.…”

“…The plasma is produced by plasma guns and is heated and sustained using ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating systems. The plug/barrier cells are located at both ends of GAMMA 10, where the ion and electron axial confinement potentials are produced by electron cyclotron resonance heating.Density and potential fluctuations are measured by a gold neutral beam probe (GNBP) system [5][6][7]. The probe beam is neutral gold particles.…”
