A dichotomous key (Melo 1996) was used to identify the Brazilian fiddler crabs, together with supple mentary descriptions of the more cryptic species (Crane 1943, Holthuis 1967, Chase & Hobbs 1969, Coelho 1972, von Hagen 1987, Tavares & de Mendonça 2003, Bedê et al 2007).
