Observations and modeling of air quality trends over 1990–2010 across the Northern Hemisphere: China, the United States and Europe

Abstract: Abstract.Trends in air quality across the Northern Hemisphere over a 21-year period were simulated using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) multiscale chemical transport model driven by meteorology from Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulations and internally consistent historical emission inventories obtained from EDGAR. Thorough comparison with several ground observation networks mostly over Europe and North America was conducted to evaluate the model performance as well as the ability of … Show more

“…1a and b, respectively). Negative trends (−1 to −0.01 kg km −2 yr −1 ) are present over North America and Europe, corresponding to pollution controls (Leibensperger et al, 2012;Klimont et al, 2013;Curier et al, 2014;Simon et al, 2015;Xing et al, 2015;. Positive trends (0.5 to 1 kg km −2 yr −1 ) in both species are present over India and eastern China, but the positive trends in emissions of SO 2 over eastern China are interspersed with negative trends (−1 Figure 1.…”

“…black carbon, organic aerosols) and aerosol precursors (e.g. sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) have decreased due to pollution controls (Leibensperger et al, 2012;Klimont et al, 2013;Curier et al, 2014;Simon et al, 2015;Xing et al, 2015;. By contrast, emissions of aerosols and aerosol precursors have increased in developing countries due to increased industrial activity, particularly in China and India.…”

“…In addition, the only statistically significant trend in regional BC emissions is a decrease in central Asia (112.6 × 10 9 g yr −1 ; p − 0.02), when GrIS albedo has declined most precipitously. Xing et al (2013Xing et al ( , 2015 point out that direct anthropogenic emissions have also been decreasing across almost all of the mid-to high-latitude Northern Hemisphere.…”

“…Several modeling efforts have been conducted to describe the past near-surface O 3 concentration development (e.g., Fusco and Logan, 2003;Schultz et al, 2007;Pozolli et al, 2011;Xing et al, 2015). Parrish et al (2014) present past trends in tropospheric O 3 concentrations modeled with three chemistry-climate models and conclude that while there is considerable qualitative agreement between the measurements and the models, there are also substantial and consistent quantitative disagreements.…”
