Observations of Heavy Oil Primary Production Mechanisms From Long Core Depletion Experiments

Abstract: Foamy oil solution gas drive mechanisms are complex and our knowledge and understanding is limited despite extensive studies in the literature. In order to advance our understanding of heavy oil solution gas drive mechanisms, long core depletion experiments were designed. These experiments were performed on sand-filled or glass bead-filled tubes that are x-ray transparent and have pressure transducers along their length. The novelty of the experiments is the length that they extend (over 18 m) and the duration… Show more

“…To generate data that is a step closer to the reservoir scale, in this work, several gas recharging processes were presented at two 18m in length large-scale core systems used by Goodarzi 17,19 and Shi 18 before. Tests were conducted in the absence of sand production, after primary production.…”

“…Since 1963, a successful natural gas-injection project in a heavy oil reservoir (14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20) located in Eastern Venezuela was conducted, reported by Garcia 3 , gas injection applied to heavy oil deposits began to be thought attractive and possible. Dynamic miscibility and gravity segregation both contributed to the high recovery.…”
