This article aims to reflect on how changes in digital sociability practices influence on the affective and sexual relationships among gay men in Northeast Brazil. We argue some of these changes are associated with an entrepreneurial ethics of desire, which is a set of desiring and sociability practices influenced by neoliberal imperatives, such as free competition, high selectiveness, meritocracy, economic rationale, utilitarianism, and self-entrepreneurship. In a mediatised reality under platform capitalism, we wonder: by taking on market-oriented practices, how do individuals constitute themselves as differentiated desiring subjects? We seek to elucidate this point by analysing seven in-depth interviews conducted with gay men whose affective-sexual trajectories have been impacted by communication technologies’ transformations in the last three decades. All respondents were gay men between 25-34 years old, residents in Recife’s metropolitan area and were contacted via Grindr. Focused on cultural scripts for sex mediated by digital media and on self-presentation in profiles, we investigate how these individuals negotiate homoerotic sociabilities simultaneously on different social platforms. In an attempt to constitute themselves as “desirable” subjects in digital spheres, these individuals experience several tensions that are triggered by social markers of desire, such as race, class, gender performativity and physicality. Based on an intersectional approach, we aim to identify aspects of what we define as an entrepreneurial ethics of desire. We also propose to investigate whether, in terms of resistance and indiscipline, we can think of an alternative sexual-affective ethics for sociability and desiring practices – namely a queer ethics of desire.

Este livro foi idealizado com o objetivo de integrar parte da recente produção teórica e metodológica desenvolvida junto a população idosa na região amazônica, e também, de outras regiões oriundas do Brasil. Neste sentido, este livro é parte integrante de uma pesquisa, mais abrangente, intitulada “Envelhecimento Humano na Amazônia: crenças dos cuidadores e sua relação com a qualidade de vida e desempenho cognitivo de idosos de contextos urbano e ribeirinho”, que teve o apoio e financiamento do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). A pesquisa foi realizada pelo Laboratório de Ecologia do Desenvolvimento (LED) do Núcleo de Teoria e Pesquisa do Comportamento (NTPC) da Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), sob a coordenação da Profa. Dra. Celina Maria Colino Magalhães. O projeto “Envelhecimento Humano na Amazônia” trata-se de uma pesquisa que foi submetida à Chamada Universal 2016 do CNPq e aprovado para execução em um período de 2018 a 2020. O projeto objetivou inicialmente compreender a relação entre o conhecimento gerontológico de cuidadores (formais e informais), a qualidade de vida e o desempenho cognitivo de idosos nos contextos urbano (institucionalizado e não institucionalizado) e ribeirinho (ilhas) localizados no município de Belém, estado do Pará. De modo particular, o presente livro pretende dar continuidade a estudos anteriores que buscaram investigar o envelhecimento humano de idosos em vários contextos do estado do Pará. Dessa maneira, elaborou-se esta obra em consonância com o desafio atual de realizar de forma sistemática a análise junto a estes idosos. Por fim, destaca-se que os capítulos abordarão questões de relevância social e científica ao investigar o envelhecimento nos diversos contextos brasileiros. Ademais, espera-se que os apontamentos aqui obtidos possam futuramente contribuir para a implementação de ações que visem melhorar aspectos ligados ao envelhecimento e, consequentemente, os idosos brasileiros. Que os leitores aproveitem a obra como ponto de partida para novas investigações científicas acerca do envelhecimento.

Despite the growing violence against LGBTQ people nationwide, the National Congress of Brazil has failed to pass any legislation protecting LGBTQ rights. The executive and judiciary have compensated for this legislative gap by protecting LGBTQ rights through palliative LGBTQ policies. By historically analyzing the anti-homophobia bill PLC 122 and presenting a discourse analysis of ten anti-LGBTQ rights bills, as well as the results of semi-structured interviews with key actors involved in the billing process (2001–2021), this article seeks to unpack why and how the anti-homophobia bill was never approved in Congress. In part, Congress’ delay in approving the anti-homophobia bill is due to conservative opposition, a weak coalition between the executive and legislative branches of government, and the fact that more religious parliamentarians are represented in politics. As a result, LGBTQ bills introduced to Congress have become political weapons used by conservative and fundamentalist religious politicians as part of electoral campaign strategies. The anti-homophobia bill has opened a political window where anti-LGBTQ discourses sustain conservative politics and enforce the alliance between religion and politics. Moreover, the bill has strengthened the religious and conservative discourse, policy manipulation and the emergence of conspiracy theories—framing the bill as “opposing God’s people” and as constraining the freedom of religion and spreading fear of pastors and priests being jailed. The main conclusion is that policy and political discourses oscillate between making decisions according to the Constitution or the Bible, creating constraints and opportunities for the approval of the LGBTQ bill in the Brazilian Congress.
