Occlusal splints – changes in the muscular activity

Abstract: Bruxism is considered an oral parafunction of involuntary grinding and clenching of the teeth. Occlusal splints are the most common method of preventing bruxism and its consequences. Their application significantly reduces the pathologies of the dental and periodontal structures. Infrared thermography is a noncontact method of temperature measurement whereby the detector is pointed remotely at a single spot. The purpose of the study is registering by means of infrared thermography the changes in the muscular a… Show more

“…VDO recovery is a major factor that affects muscle hyperactivity. 1 , 2 The short term splint therapy did not show a permanent reduction in electromyographic levels, a dramatic reduction has been demonstrated during treatment. 19 In our case, the treatment continuous to be permanent because of the fixed prosthesis.…”

“…a musculoskeletally stable position. 1 , 2 Joint problems in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be manifested by popping, clicking, limited opening, difficulty in opening and/or closing, and hearing problems. This symptomatology has a multifactorial origin - congenital malformations and syndromes, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures of the condyle, disc displacement, fibrosis, bony ankylosis, etc.…”

“…1 The splints' aims are to redistribute the occlusal forces and reduce the activity of the masticatory muscles. 5 To achieve a therapeutic effect, it is necessary to wear it almost all the time. [6][7][8] In recent years, modern methods of occlusal splints' creation using CAD/CAM technology and additive manufacturing have been increasingly developed.…”
