Occupational and Non-Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis: A Follow-Up Study

Abstract: Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to obtain insight into the clinical course and prognosis of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), including potential effects of genetic and environmental factors. Methods: Eighty-two patients with previously defined ACD acquired occupationally (OACD) or non-occupationally (NOACD) were patch retested and evaluated for the presence of persistent eczema, atopy and filaggrin mutations. Results: The crude risk for the persistence of a positive patch test (PT) reaction was 6.… Show more

“…ACD can adversely affect the quality of life (Brutti et al, 2013;Heisterberg et al, 2011;Kadyk et al, 2003). The prognosis for ACD includes the development of new skin allergies and the persistence of clinical symptoms for approximately 10 years after diagnosis, with occupational cases of ACD generally having poorer prognoses than non-occupational ACD cases (Macan et al, 2013).…”

“…Skin sensitization is a key step in the complex immune-mediated inflammatory skin reaction called allergic contact dermatitis. Although not life threatening, this disease has a profound impact on individual working ability and quality of life . The murine local lymph node assay (LLNA) is regarded as the preferred in vivo test for evaluating skin sensitization hazard and the potency of chemicals regulated not only by REACH, but various other regulatory agencies, such as the UK Health and Safety Executive and the US EPA .…”

“…1 ACD is caused by topical exposure to chemical allergens 2 and their abundance in commerce demands that hazardous chemicals must be identified and replaced by “greener”, i.e. , safer, alternatives.…”
