THE J-coefficient is a mathematical expression of the validity coefficient, based on ratings given to elements of a job by supervisors and on prevalidated approximate Beta weights of the elements for a test. That is, the supervisors rate the importance of elements of a job, and by applying Beta weights to these ratings we try to approximate the validity coefficient that would result if the same supervisors rated workers and a test were readministered (Maslow, 1958;Morsh and Ratliff, 1959;Primoff, 1957). Like all other mathematical expressions, the J-coefficient provides a result that can be stated precisely and checked (Wherry, 1955).
