This chapter relates the experiences of an applied anthropologist working in fisheries management. Although anthropology and other social sciences have much to contribute to fisheries management, fisheries managers focus mainly on biology and economics, and many are unaware of the contributions that social science can make. Motivation and effort are necessary to counteract the isolation that social scientists in biological fields can experience. Armed with an interdisciplinary background, a supportive community, a strong will, and an open mind, applied anthropologists working in fisheries management can bring new perspectives and solutions to this complex and challenging arena.
