We are the first to describe a research framework for prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in which different research disciplines are linked. This framework can help to improve theories and strengthen the development and implementation of prevention strategies for work-related MSD. Primary prevention of work-related MSD focuses often on physical risk factors (such as manual lifting and awkward postures) but has not been too successful in reducing the MSD burden. This may partly be caused by insufficient knowledge of etiological mechanisms and/or a lack of adequately feasible interventions (theory failure and program failure, respectively), possibly due to limited integration of research disciplines. A research framework could link research disciplines thereby strengthening the development and implementation of preventive interventions. Our objective was to define and describe such a framework for multi-disciplinary research on work-related MSD prevention. Affiliation MethodsWe described a framework for MSD prevention research, partly based on frameworks from other research fields (ie, sports injury prevention and public health). ResultsThe framework is composed of a repeated sequence of six steps comprising the assessment of (i) incidence and severity of MSD, (ii) risk factors for MSD, and (iii) underlying mechanisms; and the (iv) development, (v) evaluation, and (vi) implementation of preventive intervention(s). ConclusionsIn the present framework for optimal work-related MSD prevention, research disciplines are linked. This framework can thereby help to improve theories and strengthen the development and implementation of prevention strategies for work-related MSD.

Accuracy of identification of low or high risk lifting during standardised lifting situations

The aim was to classify lifting activities into low and high risk categories (according to The Danish Working Environment Authority guidelines) based on surface electromyography (sEMG) and trunk inclination (tri-axial accelerometer) measurements. Lifting tasks with different weights, horizontal distance and technique were performed. The lifting tasks were characterised by a feature vector composed of either the 90th, 95th or 99th percentile of sEMG activity level and trunk inclinations during the task. Linear Discriminant Analysis and a subject-specific threshold scheme were applied and lifting tasks were classified with an accuracy of 65.1-65.5%. When lifts were classified based on the subject-specific threshold scheme from low and upper back accelerometers, the accuracy reached 52.1-58.1% and 72.7-78.1%, respectively. In conclusion, the use of subject-specific thresholds from sEMG from upper trapezius and erector spinae as well as inclination of the upper trunk enabled us to identify low and high risk lifts with an acceptable accuracy.Practitioner Summary: This study contributes to the development of a method enabling the automatic detection of high risk lifting tasks, i.e. exposure to high biomechanical loads, based on individual sEMG and kinematics from an entire working day. These methods may be more costeffective and may complement observations commonly used by practitioners.

Abstract:Incompetency of masons is a problem because they execute many construction activities. This imparts the need to identify factors that affect the competency of masons on construction sites. Factors related to motivation, skills and personality traits are identified. A questionnaire instrument consisting of 15 factors related to the three categories was forwarded to masons on construction projects. Responses collected on a five-point Likert scale were analysed for relative importance index (RII), which was used as the basis for ranking the factors. 'Resistance to change', 'lack of appreciation', and 'lack of formal training' were identified as the first, second, and third most important factors affecting the competency of masons on construction projects. The impact of the category of motivation was found to be the highest on the competency of masons, followed by skills, and personality traits.
