Occupational dermatoses in a metalworking plant

Abstract: In a plant producing advanced components for engines and drivelines we undertook a survey of occupational dermatoses, based on a questionnaire, clinical examination, and patch testing with a standard series and a series of samples from the working environment. The questionnaire was given to all 430 employees and it was answered and returned by 382 of these. 214 reported having had or having skin manifestations during the time of employment suspected of being work-related. 183 employees (164 metal workers, 19 o… Show more

“…Chemicals used in tanneries alter the structure of animal hide and therefore may have a damaging effect on the function and the structure to the worker’s skin. We did not find large differences between the results of our cross-sectional survey on OSD with a high risk for OSD in Western countries (Gruvberger et al 2003; Flyvholm et al 2005; Attwa and el-Laithy 2009; Skudlik et al 2009). However, in the observed tanneries, many typical hazardous situations were seen.…”

“…Occupational hand dermatitis is common in metal workers exposed to wb MWF (Berndt et al 2000;de Boer et al 1989a, b;Funke et al 2001;Grattan et al 1989;Gruvberger et al 2003;Pryce et al 1989a, b). In several studies, the prevalence or 3 year incidence of hand eczema in MWF exposed metal workers was found to be 20-25% (Berndt et al 2000, de Boer et al 1989aFunke et al 2001).…”
