“…About 700,000 tons of raw asbestos have been used in Lithuania since 1961 for asbestos-cement corrugated sheets and pipes, for the insulation of boilers and pipes, and for friction products [State Labour Inspection, 2001;Smailytė et al, 2003]. According to the International Information System on Occupational Exposure to Known or Suspected Carcinogens (CAREX) estimates, there were 7,451 workers exposed to asbestos in Lithuania in 1997, 3,120 (42%) of whom worked in the construction sector [Pajarskiene and Kauppinen, 2000;Kauppinen et al, 2001]. There were two factories manufacturing asbestos-cement pipes and tiles in the country.…”
