Occupational exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Abstract: Our results do not provide support for an association between NHL and occupational exposure to ionizing or ELF radiation. For UV radiation, our findings are consistent with a weak positive association. Further investigation focusing on UV and RF radiation and NHL is required.

“…2830 However, recent findings derived from the analysis applying the Finnish job-exposure matrix for the assessment of exposure to ultraviolet radiation, concerning the risk of NHL, were consistent with a weak positive association only. 31 The night is unnatural time to work from the physiological point of view, and therefore abnormalities in the circadian clockwork are most frequent and potentially most severe after exposure to night-time work in particular. It may explain our findings herein that NHL was associated with night-time work only and not with shift work in general.…”

“…The relevance of FINJEM exposure estimates to other countries is not clear. FINJEM has been applied in various studies in different countries (Dryver et al, 2004;Karipidis et al, 2007), but a comprehensive evaluation of the relevance of the estimates of prevalence and level for other countries has, to our knowledge, not been carried out. Unfortunately, it was also not feasible to include such an evaluation by comparing FINJEM estimates with local exposure estimates, due to lack of resources and because estimates were generally not readily available in the same format.…”

“…It was decided to use the Finnish job exposure matrix (FINJEM) (Kauppinen et al, 1998), the largest available population-based JEM, as modified during the Nordic Occupational Cancer study (NOCCA) (Kauppinen et al, 2009). The FINJEM covers major occupational exposures occurring in Finland since 1945 and has been successfully applied in a number of studies in Scandinavia and other countries (Dryver et al, 2004;Karipidis et al, 2007).…”

“…1 The exact pathogenesis thus far has remained elusive, and most occur in a sporadic fashion. [2][3][4][5][6][7] Rarely they occur in the setting of hereditary syndromes. 8 Despite an aggressive multimodal approach, the median survival time after diagnosis is approximately a year with population-based studies demonstrating even lower median survival rates.…”
