“…13,29 Only a few studies are available on occupational factors of brain cancer among women. Increased risk has been reported among women employed in textile industry 30,31 and among the males employed in the weaving and spinning departments in Poland. 13 It should be noted that the increased incidence of brain cancer was recorded among the women employed in the weaving and spinning departments in Alytus factory.…”

“…Vinyl chloride, polyurethane, polystyrene and polyethylene used as monomer and polymer substances in the plastic industry are also very important in the NSC etiology 6,27 . Several authors have shown that the carcinogenic agents such as: high molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbons (gasoline, diesel oil), aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and polychlorinated biphenyl, increase the risk of NSC in populational groups submitted to occupational exposure (drivers, heavy-vehicle operators) and environmental pollution 6,7,31,32 .…”

“…This fact has been attributed to the improvement in diagnostic techniques 6,10,28 and exposure to carcinogenic factors 6,7,29 . Among these, urbanization, industrialization, socioeconomic conditions, lifestyles and occupational exposure have been cited 11,25,37 .…”

“…With the exception of familial cancer syndromes (Li-Fraumeni) involving the nervous system and irradiation, the etiology of brain tumors is still largely unknown (Kleihues and Cavenee, 2000). Epidemiological studies have shown that increased risk of brain tumor development is associated with certain occupations, such as farming, dentistry, fire fighting, metal works, and the rubber industry, but specific exposures or causative environmental agents have not been identified (Thomas et al, 1986;Kaplan et al, 1997). Malignant glioma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults, while neuroblastoma, a tumor of the postganglionic sympathetic nervous system, is the most common extracranial solid tumor of children (DeAngelis, 2001).…”
