By adopting a systematic literature and science mapping review, this paper aims to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on organizational justice and project performance. A total of 47 bibliographic records from the Scopus database were analyzed. The results revealed the annual publication trends of research articles and relevant peer-reviewed journals in the studied domain. It was found that while AI technology has made significant progress in several fields, its application areas in project management and organizational justice are still relatively low. Moreover, it objectively discussed the co-occurrence analysis of keywords, co-authors, countries/regions, and documents in the fields, revealing the current research topics. The main research topics include the (1) AI’s influence on organizational justice, decision analysis, and digital transformation, (2) fostering organizational justice and AI’s role in enhancing project performance, and (3) improving organizational performance approaches. Furthermore, this paper proposed research gaps and future research directions, including (1) advancing business intelligence strategies, (2) unlocking AI technology potential on organizational justice and project performance, (3) the adaption of cultural, diversity, environmental, and social factors, (4) the impact of AI on complex and challenging leadership styles, and (5) developing a comprehensive understanding of the agile framework. The findings of this paper could contribute to a better understanding of how AI shapes project/construction management and organizational justice, providing practical solutions for innovative development for researchers and policymakers.

PurposeRecent emerging information technologies like digital twin (DT) provide new concepts and transform information management processes in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Although numerous articles are pertinent to DT applications, existing research areas and potential future directions related to the state-of-the-art DT in project operation and maintenance (O&M) are yet to be studied. Therefore, this paper aims to review the state-of-the-art research on DT applications in project O&M.Design/methodology/approachThe current review adopted four methodological steps, including literature search, literature selection, science mapping analysis and qualitative discussion to gain a deeper understanding of DT in project O&M. The impact and contribution of keywords and documents were examined from a total of 444 journal articles retrieved from the Scopus database.FindingsFive mainstream research topics were identified, including (1) DT-based artificial intelligence technology for project O&M, (2) DT-enabled smart city and sustainability, (3) DT applications for project asset management, (4) Blockchain-integrated DT for project O&M and (5) DT for advanced project management. Subsequently, research gaps and future research directions were proposed.Originality/valueThis study intends to raise awareness of future research by summarizing the current DT development phases and their impact on DT implementation in project O&M among researchers and practitioners.

Exploring how AI adoption in the workplace affects employees: a bibliometric and systematic review

IntroductionThe adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace is changing the way organizations function, and profoundly affecting employees. These organizational changes raise crucial questions about the employee’s future and well-being. Our study aims to explore the intersection between artificial intelligence and employee well-being through a bibliometric review and a contextual analysis.MethodologyCarried out in May 2024, our study is divided into two phases. The first phase, dedicated to bibliometric review, was conducted using the PRISMA method, and explored the Scopus and Web of Science databases for the period from 2015 to 2024. A total of 92 articles were selected for quantitative analysis using VOSviewer software. The second phase is based on an in-depth systematic analysis of 25 articles selected from those previously identified. These articles were selected on the basis of their relevance to the research question, and were subjected to in-depth thematic analysis using NVivo software.ResultsThe bibliometric analysis results reveal a significant increase in publications starting from the year 2020, highlighting advancements in research, primarily in the United States and China. The co-occurrence analysis identifies four main clusters: ethics, work autonomy, employee stress, and mental health, thus illustrating the dynamics created by artificial intelligence in the professional environment. Furthermore, the systematic analysis has brought to light theoretical gaps and under-explored areas, such as the need to conduct empirical studies in non-Western cultural contexts and among diverse target groups, including older adults, individuals of different sexes, people with low education levels, and participants from various sectors, including primary and secondary industries, small manufacturing businesses, call centers, as well as public and private healthcare sectors.ConclusionExisting literature emphasize the importance for organizations to implement supportive strategies aimed at mitigating the potential adverse effects of AI on employee well-being, while also leveraging its benefits to enhance workplace autonomy and satisfaction and promote AI-enabled innovation through employee creativity and self-efficacy.
