This article is an ethnography of an investigation of an underexplored sociolinguistic phenomenon, namely handwritten signs in public spaces, against a context of urban regeneration and socio-cultural transformation. These signs are a subset of urban communicates that involve handwriting, lettering or the painting of letters and text using different materials and serving different functions. We focus primarily on handwritten signs on paper or cards. The data were collected in Stratford, a ward in the ethnically and linguistically diverse London Borough of Newham and home of the 2012 Olympics. Our analytical focus is on the indexicalities of the handwritten signs. We engaged ordinary residents in Stratford, customers and visitors of the two main shopping centres, precinct management, and local council staff who interacted with such signs as part of their everyday work and life, as well as non-participant commentators in interpreting and analysing the meanings of the signs. We also analyse the disappearance of the signs vis-à-vis urban development policies, and the emergence of refashioned painted signs with handwritten style lettering in the global-facing commercial spaces. The study highlights the significance of handwritten signs and invite the reader to engage in making sense of their meaning potentials and symbolic values.

The rise of mobile food vending in US cities combines urban space and mobility with continuous online communication. Unlike traditional urban spaces that are predictable and known, contemporary vendors use information technology to generate impromptu social settings in unconventional and often underutilized spaces. This unique condition requires new methods that interpret online communication as a critical component in the production of new forms of public life. We suggest qualitative approaches combined with data-driven analyses are necessary when planning for emergent behavior. In Charlotte, NC, we investigate the daily operations, tweet content, and spatial and temporal sequencing of six vendors over an extended period of time. El caso de las manifestaciones de 2012 frente al Congreso de Diputados en Madrid, sirve para exponer un modelo de análisis de los espacios comunicativos. En aquella ocasión, un mapa online del centro de Madrid recogía los tuits de los manifestantes geolocalizados e incluyendo el hashtag #voces25s. Un código de colores representaba la ubicación de los ciudadanos, así como las cargas policiales. Aquella manifestación, y muchas otras que han seguido desde entonces, construían un espacio comunicativo que cruzaba lo virtual y lo físico. Para entender las condiciones sociopolíticas de este espacio para la discusión pública, se proponen cuatro modos análisis del aparato que lo configura: las representaciones, las texturas, las estructuras y las conexiones.Occupy the squares with tweets. A proposal for analysing the governance of communication spacesAbstractThe demonstration in 2012 in front of the Chamber of Deputies in Madrid serves to introduce a model for analysing communication spaces. During the demonstration, an online map of the centre of Madrid was used to collect the geolocated tweets of protestors under the hashtag #voces25s. A colour code represented the location of the citizens as well as the police charges. In that demonstration, and many that have followed since, a communication space was created across the virtual and the physical realms.
