“…Information to this effect regarding transvesical prostatectomy has mainly been reported by Swedish investigators. Becker et al (1970), using phlebography for the diagnosis of DVT, reported an incidence of 21 per cent in 187 patients who underwent the operation of transvesical prostatectomy. As regards the incidence of DVT following retropubic prostatectomy, Nicolaides et al (1972), using the lZ5I-fibrinogen test, reported an incidence of 47.6 per cent in 21 patients, and Gordon-Smith et a1 (1972), using the same test, reported an incidence of 28 per cent in 32 patients.…”

“…Most authors agree, however, that recanalization can be seen within days in patients on fibrinolytic therapy, within weeks to months in patients on heparin-dicoumarol treatment and within months to years in patients without therapy (Bergvall & Hjelmstedt, 1968;Becker, Borgstrom & Saltzman, 1970;Thomas & McAllister, 1971;Common, et al, 1976;Arnesen, Hoiseth & Ly, 1982;Rabinov & Paulin, 1983). In addition, small and distal thrombi have more often disappeared on repeat phlebograms than femoral and iliac thrombi (Young, Thomas & Browse, 1974;May & Nissl, 1979).…”

“…Bergvall & Hjelmstedt, on the other hand, found the process of recanalization was slow in patients with tibial fractures (more than 3 4 years). Becker et al (1970) performed a phlebographic follow-up an average of 33 weeks after postprostatectomy deep vein thrombosis and found residual pathological findings in half of the cases. But they did not relate the phlebographic findings to clinical symptoms and the possibility of further regression must be kept in mind.…”
