“…A significant correlation was recorded between the abundance of A. pegreffii larvae present in the viscera of the hakes and the larvae counted in the flesh (r 2 = 0.345, p < 0.01). This result is consistent with similar observations reported by Karl and Levsen (2011) in grey gurnards infected by A. simplex (s. s.). Indeed, these authors reported in this fish "…a significantly positive relationship between both abundance and intensity of the larvae (A. simplex (s. s.)) in the flesh and the viscera (r = 0.64 and r = 0.59, respectively), i.e.…”

“…The hakes were gutted, and the viscera of each individual was separated. Flesh was cut into two to four portions of fillets, separating the hypaxial (ventral) and epaxial (dorsal) regions, following the horizontal septum, and afterwards it was placed in individual plastic bags, pressed under hydraulic press and stored overnight at −20°C for subsequent detection of larvae under UV light (Karl and Leinemann, 1993;Karl and Levsen, 2011;Levsen et al, in press). The larvae were counted and identified to genus level using an optical microscope according to the diagnostic morphological keys (sensu Berland, 1961).…”

“…Muscle tissue was filleted and subsequently weighed (muscle weight, MW). Nematode larvae were removed from muscle tissue and visceral organs using the UV-press method of larval inspection as described by Karl & Leinemann [21] and later updated and modified by Karl & Levsen [22]. Nematode larvae were removed from all tissues and fixed in Davidsons' AFA fixative solution for 24 h before being stored in glycerol-alcohol.…”

“…Since the late 1980s, the grey gurnard has been thought to be responsible for the highest predation mortality among young Atlantic cod Gadus morhua, Norway pout Trisopterus esmarkii and whiting Merlangius merlangus (de Gee & Kikkert 1993). Grey gurnard catch rates in the international bottom trawl surveys have significantly increased in recent years (Floeter et al 2005), and the species is currently considered a sustainable stock, which permits the future increased use as a food resource (Horst & Levsen 2011).…”
