Occurrence and Impact of Heavy Metals on Some Water, Land, Flora and Fauna Resources across Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract: Rapid urbanization and industrialization in communities of Nigeria contribute significantly to environmental pollution. Amongst the diversity of these environmental contaminants are heavy metals, a rarely biodegradable and toxic class of metals. Heavy metals are known to be harmful to plants, aquatic species, and subsequently endanger human health through bioaccumulation or biomagnification. Even at low concentrations, heavy metals may affect key soil microbial processes; inhibit plant metabolism and growth. T… Show more

“…Heavy metals from such polluted sites are introduced directly through surface runoff into water bodies or indirectly through non-point source contaminants washed into water bodies [25]. In China, trace metals (As, Mn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn) in water from mining sites and industrial locations were evaluated against their concentrations with the guidelines for drinking water versus surface water established by the China Environment Protect Agency (EPA) in 2002 and 2006.…”

“…Apart from implications on human health [35] , intensities of inorganic and organic substances in water bodies may threaten health of aquatic organisms including fish [7] . Heavy metal are exclusive naturally occurring elements that persevere in the environment for long time and may not be eco-friendly [11] . Heavy metal are naturally found in the Earth's crust.…”
