Occurrence of Antibiotic Resistance Genes, Antibiotics-Resistant and Multi-Resistant Bacteria and Their Correlations in One River in Central-Western Brazil

Abstract: (1) Background: The uncontrolled increase in pollutants in the aquatic environment results in antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARBs and ARGs). The overuse and misuse of antibiotics is also a crucial factor for public health. (2) Methods: In this study, the presence of ARBs and the presence of 24 resistance genes from eight different classes of antibiotics were evaluated in addition to performing statistical correlations and intercorrelations. Samples of water and sediment were col… Show more

“…Rivers, acting as freshwater reservoirs, play essential roles in diverse human activities, covering from agriculture to recreation (Harnisz et al, 2020;Lemessa et al, 2023). The exacerbation of the water crisis, compounded by environmental damage and resource depletion in recent years (Gomes et al, 2023).Of particular concern is the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within river ecosystems, driven by various factors including extensive use and application of antibiotics in agriculture and animal husbandry, and the increased self-medication during the COVID-19 pandemic (Gržinić et al, 2023). It has been examined that the consequences of such problems, like increased mortality, prolonged treatment and hospitalisation times enhanced the risk of AMR (Ansari et al, 2008;Amarasiri et al, 2020;Pulingam et al, 2022;Yin et al, 2021).…”

“…Para consumo humano, as águas devem ser submetidas a tratamento e que elimine os coliformes termotolerantes. Porém, caso isso não ocorra e a água ingerida esteja contaminada, principalmente com bactérias resistentes, as pessoas estarão suscetíveis não somente a infecções, mas também a problemas causados pela resistência a antibióticos (Sério et al, 2023;Gomes et al, 2023).…”
