Occurrence of Antifouling Biocides in the Spanish Mediterranean Marine Environment

Abstract: A compilation of the results of a monitoring program of the recently used antifouling pesticides diuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea), Irgarol 1051 (2-methylthio-4-tertiary-butylamino-6-cyclopropylamino-s-teiazine), seanine 211 (4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothazolin-3-one), chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetrachloro-isophthalonitrile), dichlofluanid (N'-dimethyl-N-phenylsulphanamide), TCMTB ((2-thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole), and three degradation products demethyldiuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-meth… Show more

“…Thomas et al (2001) indicated that diuron concentrations in areas of high shipping/boating activity are generally 10 to 180 ng l -1 , but levels as high as 6500 ng l -1 have been measured in one instance. In enclosed waters of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, Martinez et al (2001) reported up to 2200 ng l -1 diuron. No studies have measured diuron concentrations in tropical and subtropical coastal waters.…”

“…This work evaluates the effects of MTBE on toxicity of the pesticides Diuron, Dichlofluanid, Sea nine 211, Irgarol 1051, Linuron and Tributyltin (TBT). These specific compounds are found frequently in marinas, rivers, and lakes [4][5][6]. Diuron, Linuron and Irgarol are biocides, which act as inhibitors of photosystem-II and are used to eradicate algae.…”

“…In the United Kingdom and Spain, diuron has been detected in several estuaries which have high levels of recreational boating (Boxall et al 2000, Thomas et al 2000, Martinez et al 2001. Concentrations of diuron in marinas were an order of magnitude higher in summer compared to winter (Boxall et al 2000), and these areas are not adjacent to catchments where diuron is used as an agricultural herbicide.…”
