Occurrence of Diseases in Floricultural Crops in and around Jorhat, Assam

Abstract: The objective of this study was to identify pathogenic diseases of economically important floricultural crops based on visual inspection and microscopic observation carried out during 2017-18 in and around Jorhat district of Assam. During the investigation, 3 diseases of chrysanthemum (2 fungal, 1 viral); 3 diseases of gladiolus (all fungal); 5 diseases of gerbera (all fungal), 2 diseases of rose (all fungal) and a fungal disease of marigold was identified. The diseases identified in chrysanthemum were alterna… Show more

“…Fungal diseases affect the production of all most common flowers. A study carried out in 2017-18 in India investigated the occurrence of pathogenic diseases of economically important floricultural crops, highlighting an incidence of fungal infections of 57% in chrysanthemum, 56% in gerbera, 47% in rose, 46% in gladiolus, and 46% in marigold [61]. The early detection of pathogens, also through digital tools, is the only option to tackle these significant losses and achieve a sustainable ornamental production.…”

“…The state has recorded 9.1% per annum growth in the area under spice cultivation and a 19% annual growth rate in production. The average yield of the major spices, i.e., ginger, turmeric, chilli, and black pepper has increased over the years in the state (Borah, 2020). However, the instability index of 20.29% and 27.86% for the area under cultivation and production respectively indicate moderate instability which can be mitigated through strategic planning and correct policy interventions.…”
