“…Similar results have also been reported by Massar et al (2012). Abnormally shaped red blood cells, codocytes observed in the current study has been reported by Naskar et al, 2006. Zeni et al (2002 in a study on fish Ictalurus melas observed occurrence of echinocytosis when exposed to sublethal concentrations of an anionic detergent.…”

“…Morphological changes in erythrocytes often occur in fish as a result of intoxication with various inorganic or organic poisons (Sorensen and Bauer 1983;Fletcher and White 1986;Gill and Pant 1987;Shandilya and Banerjee 1989;Boge and Roche 1996;Vosyliene 1996;Zeni et al 2002). According to Vosyliene (1999) and Zeni et al (2002), morphology of erythrocytes is one of the most specific and sensitive indicators of the effect of various environmental factors on fish. Own data (Witeska 2001(Witeska , 2003 obtained for common carp subjected to 10 mg dm )3 of Cd for 3 h showed also considerable morphological anomalies in these cells (mainly nuclear malformations, cell malformations, and divisions).…”

“…Inwardly the multiplicity of biomarkers for evaluating aquatic environments, those which mirror effects on DNA, are well known due to ecological implications (Ramsdorf et al, 2012). Erythrocyte morphology of fishes is more sensitive to various environmental contaminants than red blood cell parameters (Witeska, 2004;Zeni, Bovolenta, & Stagni, 2002), and cellular abnormalities are sometimes observed without distinct decrease in their values (Witeska, Kondera, Szymanska, & Ostrysz, 2010). The micronucleus test is one of the most utilized cytogenetic techniques for genotoxicity assays and has been widely applied in peripheral blood of teleostean fishes in studies in the field (in situ) (Tolbert, Shy, & Allen, 1991) and bioassays (Al-Sabti & Metcalfe, 1995).…”
