Occurrence of erythromycin and its degradation products residues in honey. Validation of an analytical method

Abstract: Erythromycin A, the main component of erythromycin, is widely used to treat and control foulbrood diseases in honey bees. In this study, we developed a fast and sensitive method to simultaneously determine erythromycin A and its degradation products in honey. The analytical methodology was based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry with advanced i-Funnel technology. The liquid-liquid microextraction and liquid chromatography coupled with ta… Show more

“…That is the fact that the occurrence of ERY in honey increases and consequently enters the human digestion system via honey consumption which causes damage to human health. [10,11] Tetracycline (TET) is another broad-spectrum antibiotic applied directly to bee hives by beekeepers to prevent bacterial infections of larval bees such as AFB and EFB. Furthermore, it is also used to reduce the loss of honey bee populations and to promote honey production.…”

“…Since the use of sulphonamides type of antibiotics led to the development of antibiotic resistance of AFB and EFB in apiculture, these drugs have been partly replaced by ERY for controlling and treating foulbrood diseases in honeybees. That is the fact that the occurrence of ERY in honey increases and consequently enters the human digestion system via honey consumption which causes damage to human health [10,11] …”

“…Thus, there is a high pressure on laboratories responsible for food safety to monitor the use of these drugs. Various instrumental methods have been established for the determination of ERY in food samples [ 1 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. These instrumental methods for monitoring ERY are generally time-consuming, requiring skilled technicians and complex sample pretreatment, which may not always be available for high-throughput screening.…”
