Occurrence of Granulomas in Bovines: An Abattoir-Based Study

Abstract: The present study was carried out to record the occurrence of naturally occurring granulomas in cattle and buffaloes. Tissues grossly suspected for granulomas were collected from 336 out of 1600 (21%) abattoir cases. The gross features ranged from focal necrosis to large caseated masses, hard nodules, growths and abscesses. Histopathologically, 102 tissue samples (6.38%) were ascertained as granulomas. Majority of the granulomas were found in the liver 42 (41.18%), followed by lungs 22 (20.59%), lymph nodes 11… Show more

“…The foreign-body granulomatous lesions were composed of mononuclear cells, mainly macrophages and lymphocytes, and a few plasma cells as reported elsewhere in humans [ 25 ]. Granulomas are soft tissue responses normally provoked by insistent microorganisms or their products which resist phagocytosis or inactive foreign material [ 26 ]. They initiate the damage through a type IV hypersensitivity immune-mediated reaction [ 27 ].…”

“…They initiate the damage through a type IV hypersensitivity immune-mediated reaction [ 27 ]. Granulomas, therefore, differ in morphology and are triggered by diverse irritants [ 26 ]. Results of the present study agree with previous ones that O. stricta -associated foreign bodies in tissues cause noxious and sensitive responses including, infection and inflammation that vary in severity [ 25 ].…”

“…This is important for the development of therapeutic and manipulative interventions to enhance buffalo reproduction. This warrants further investigation since ovarian functional disorders, such as subestrus, persistent corpus luteum, ovarian cysts, inflammation, and neoplasms, are frequently observed in buffaloes [3,24].…”
