Occurrence of leptospiral infections in swine population in Poland evaluated by ELISA and microscopic agglutination test

Abstract: Swine are one of significant reservoirs and sources of Leptospira infections for man. Serological screenings help to effectively control the epidemiological situation in swine herds and to prevent transmission of Leptospira from animals to man. The purpose of this study was to investigate, by the use of serological methods, the prevalence of infections caused by selected Leptospira serogroups in swine population in Poland.A total of 7112 swine serum samples were examined. The samples were collected from Januar… Show more

“…In Japanese herds, the prevalence observed was 14.4% (Naito et al., 2007). In the central region of Italy (Valentina et al., 2003), 6.0% of positive animals were detected among 662 boars bred outdoors in six cities, and a low prevalence of 0.9 was found in a pig population in Poland (Wasiński and Pejsak, 2010). In Brazil, 42.2% of seropositives was verified in 1.545 swines from 83 pig farms in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Lima, 1996).…”

“…Stwierdzone przez nas na terenie popowodziowym reakcje seropozytywne u świń występowały częściej w porównaniu z wynikami dotychczasowych badań seroepidemiologicznych autorów polskich i zagranicznych [34,38,39], natomiast reakcje seropozytywne u krów na tym terenie były wyższe od wyników dotychczasowych badań polskich i porównywalne z wynikami niektórych badań zagranicznych [34,38,39].…”

“…The infections caused by serovars from the Sejroe serogroup were reported in Germany (3), the U.K. (14,17,18), Hungary (13), Romania (8), and Russia (19) among other countries. Serological monitoring of leptospirosis in swine herds, which has been extensive for many years across Poland, indicated a relatively high percentage of animals presenting titres to the Sejroe serogroup (26)(27)(28). Although the Pomona serovar is most often indicated as the cause of swine leptospirosis in Poland, the number of pigs showing titres to the Sejroe serogroup is usually almost as high, or in some years even higher, than the number of animals demonstrating titres to the Pomona serogroup (27).…”
