Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of pneumonia associated with measles among children and infants. Study Design: Cross-sectional Place and Duration: Pediatrics department of Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar and Sharif Medical and Dental College, Lahore for six months duration from February 2020 to July 2020. Methods: Total 150 patients i.e children and infants of both genders were included in this study. Children were aged <5years of age. Patients’ detailed demographics height and weight were recorded after taking informed written consent from the authorities. Patients’ diagnosed measles were presented. Symptoms and frequency of pneumonia among all patients were assessed. Complete data was analyzed by SPSS 22.0 version. Results: There were 90 (60%) children and 60 (40%) infants. Among 150 patients, 100 (66.7%) were males and 50 (33.3%) were females. 70 (46.7%) cases had birth weight > 3kg. 30 (20%) patients had high socioeconomic status, 50 (33.3%) had middle and 70 (46.6%) cases had poor. 85 (56.7%) patients had rural residency. According to severity of measles, 35 (23.3%) had mild,45 (30%) cases had moderate and severity was among 70 (46.7%) patients. Prevalence of pneumonia was found among 95 (63.3%) cases. 40 (26.75) cases had measles vaccination. Conclusion: We concluded in this study that prevalence of pneumonia among children of measles were significantly high. It was due to less number of vaccination status with poor socio economic status among patients. It can be controlled by providing awareness of vaccination to the parents of children. Background: Though Bangladesh has done well to reduce the measles cases and measles related deaths through an effective vaccination programme, measles cases are still found in a good number in hospitals. The objectives of our study was to find out the vaccination status of laboratory confirmed measles patients and also to see the socio-demographic status of those patients. Methodology: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in five Upazilla Health Complexes (UHC) of Gazipur district during a period of one year from 01/01/2017 to 31/12/ 2017. The Upazillas included were Gazipur Sadar, Kaliganj, Kaliakair, Sreepur and Tongi. The suspected measles patients were admitted after taking history and clinical examination and confirmed by doing specific laboratory investigation. Measles vaccination status and sociodemographic status of the these confirmed cases were analysed by using SPSS version 21. Results: Blood samples were sent from 93 patients who were admitted during the study period after observing the diagnostic criteria of measles. Out of them 45 patients were confirmed as measles and they are included in the study. Among the laboratory confirmed measles, 28 cases (62.22%) were males and 17 (37.78%) cases were females, ratio of male and female was 1.6:1. The maximum number of patients (62.22%) were in the age group of 9 months to 4 years. Maximum patients came from low socioeconomic condition with a monthly income of 10,000- 15,000 taka. About maternal education, 26 mothers (57.78%) were uneducated, 12(26.67%) below primary and 7(15.55%) up or above primary level. Among the total patients, 27(60%) patients came with pneumonia, 16(35.56%) patients with both pneumonia and diarrhoea and 2(4.44%) patients only with diarrhoea. We found 32 patients (71.11%) received no MCV(Measles containing vaccine) , 11 patients (24.44%) with one MCV and 2 patients (4.44%) received two MCVs. There we found several causes of dropout of measles vaccine. Lack of awareness regarding one vaccine was the most common cause (42.22%) and then ignorance about two measles vaccine (28.89) followed by migration (17.78%) and parental occupation (11.11%). History of contact with measles patients were found in 24.44% cases , no history in 26.67% cases and in 48.89% cases the history of contact is unknown. Background: Measles is a self-limited viral disease. But it can cause serious complications in young children and still remains as an important cause of mortality and morbidity in under five children worldwide. Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine the complications of measles in hospitalized children and to observe the socio-demographic profile of them. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in Dr M R Khan Shishu Hospital and Institute of Child Health from March to December 2019. Children of 6 months to 10 years who came with signs and symptoms of measles according to the case definition criteria by WHO, like fever with maculopapular rash associated with cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis were included in the study. Their sociodemographic profile was recorded and different complications were noted. Results: A total of 86 children suffering from measles with different complications were admitted during the study period. They were from 6 months to 10 years. Among them 59% were below 1 year, 80% were below 4 years and 94% were less than 7 years. Thirty eight percent children were from lower and thirty percent from middle socioeconomic background. Pneumonia was the main complication found in 62(72%) cases followed by diarrhea 28(32%), oral ulcer 26(30%), croup 5(6%) and febrile seizure 4(4.6%). Most (79%) of the children, had normal nutritional status. Among 62 children aged 9 months to 10 years, only 16(26%) received 2 doses of measles vaccine, 14(23%) only the first dose and 32(52%) was not vaccinated at all. Vaccination rate was poor (27%) in low socio-economic condition. The mortality rate was 1(1.16%). Conclusion: About 60% of the children, suffering from measles, were less than one year of age. Fifty nine percent of them were not vaccinated. The children developed complications like pneumonia, diarrhea, oral ulcers etc. Vaccination status was poor in low socio-economic condition. So, awareness should be created about timely vaccination of measles. DS (Child) H J 2022; 38(2): 84-88
