Occurrence of the basking sharkCetorhinus maximus(Gunnerus, 1765) (Lamniformes: Cetorhinidae) in the central-eastern Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: The presence of the basking shark Cetorhinus maximus (Lamniformes: Cetorhinidae) in the central-eastern Mediterranean Sea has been documented by means of 15 sightings and two accidental catches which occurred from February 2011 to January 2014 in the northwestern Ionian and southern Adriatic Sea. Specimens were observed exhibiting typical feeding behaviour, swimming slowly on the surface, during each sighting. In the case of the accidental catches, the basking shark specimens were released still alive by local… Show more

“…The basking shark (C. maximus) has been reported in different Mediterranean areas with some records distributed in all GSAs. The majority of other records was observed (in decreasing order) in the northern Tyrrhenian Sea (GSA 9) (Serena et al, 1999b), Balearic Islands, northern coasts of Spain (GSA 5 and 6), Adriatic Sea (GSA 17) (Mancusi et al, 2005), Tunisia (GSA 13 and 14) (Capapé et al, 2003b), Turkey (Kabasakal, 2013b), Syria (Ali et al, 2012) and northern Ionian Sea (Carlucci et al, 2014) (Fig. 3B).…”

“…Established officially in 1985 , it became fully operational in 2000, beginning to record data on elasmobranchs catches, sightings, strandings, and historical records within a single database (Ben-Tuvia, 1971;Boero & Carli, 1979;Biagi, 1995;Megalofonou et al, 2000;Lipej et al, 2000;Bradaï et al, 2002;Barrul & Mate, 2002;Soldo & Jardas, 2002a;Soldo & Jardas, 2002b;Morey & Massuti, 2003;Kabasakal, 2004;Morey et al, 2006;Morey et al, 2008;Kabasakal & De Maddalena, 2011;Kabasakal, 2013a;Kabasakal, 2013b;Carlucci et al, 2014).…”

“…A narrow continental shelf with a steep slope and several channels characterize the western sector, while the eastern sector shows descending terraces toward the ‘Taranto Valley’, a NW–SE submarine canyon with no clear bathymetric connection to a major river system (Capezzuto et al, ; Harris & Whiteway, ; Pescatore & Senatore, ; Rossi & Gabbianelli, ). This singular morphology involves a complex distribution of water masses with a mixing of surface and dense bottom waters with the occurrence of high seasonal variability in upwelling currents (Bakun & Agostini, ; Carlucci, Battista, Capezzuto, Serena, & Sion, ; Matarrese, Chiaradia, Tijani, Morea, & Carlucci, ).…”

“…This is consistent with results documented for the striped dolphins in the north-western Ligurian Sea (Gannier, 1999), where striped dolphins feed exploiting mesopelagic prey during their daily vertical migrations (Bello, 1993;Blanco, Anzar, & Raga, 1995;Öztürk, Salman, Öztürk, & Tonay, 2007;Spitz, Richard, Meynier, Pusineri, & Ridoux, 2006;Würtz & Marrale, 1993). In this light, an important meso-and bathypelagic community has been described in the area due to the presence of a narrow continental shelf and steep slope (Capezzuto et al, 2010), the canyon system in the "Taranto Valley" (Pescatore & Senatore, 1986) as well as the mixing of surface and dense bottom waters (Sellschopp & Álvarez, 2003) with the occurrence of upwelling currents (Bakun & Agostini, 2001;Carlucci et al, 2014;Matarrese et al, 2011;Milligan & Cattaneo, 2007).…”
