The box tree moth (BTM), Cydalima perspectalis and the fall webworm (FWW), Hyphantria cunea are two invasive pests of forest trees that have been recorded from Hyracinan forests in north Iran for the first time in 2016 and 2002, respectively. In a search for tentative native entomopathogenic nematode species (EPNs) with potential biocontrol ability against lepidopteran pests of forest trees in north Iran, Oscheius myriophilus was isolated by soil-baiting method from forests of Amlash in the east of Gilan province. The Iranian isolate of this species is characterized by 870–1,247 μm long hermaphrodites having 17–20 μm long stoma, vulva at 45.5–53.1% of body length, tail 90–126 μm long, common males with 38–49 μm long spicules and 583–791 μm long dauer larvae. Compared to the type and other populations, no remarkable differences were observed for this population. The phylogenetic affinities of this isolate with other rhabditid nematodes were studied using partial sequences of small, and the D2-D3 expansion segments of the large subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU and D2-D3 LSU rDNA). This is the first record of the species from Iran. The pathogenicity of Iranian isolate of O. myriophilus was evaluated on the larvae of two important aforementioned forest trees pests, BTM and FWW under laboratory conditions. The results indicated that the suspension of 500 infective juveniles per ml (IJs/ml) of the nematode was the most effective treatment on fifth instar larvae of BTM and FWW, causing 100 and 95% mortality after 48 h, respectively. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) values of the nematode were 74.5, 152.7, 99.9, and 197.3 IJs/ml on fifth and fourth instar larvae of BTM, and fifth and fourth instar larvae of FWW, respectively, after 48 h at 25°C and 60% relative humidity. Together, present results corroborated the efficacy of the Iranian isolate of Oscheius myriophilus for biocontrolling of BTM and FWW in laboratory conditions.

From Glory to Decline: Uncovering Causes of Oak Decline in Iran

Oak decline is a major concern in Iran. A literature search with the terms ‘Iran’ AND ‘oak’ OR ‘Quercus’ from 1963 through 2023 resulted in 635 articles with over 200 dealing specifically with oak decline. In Iran, oak decline is most severe in the Zagros forests, followed by the Arasbaran and Hyrcanian forests. Of Iran's 11 native oak species, Quercus brantii is the most affected. Several factors have been identified as contributing to oak decline in Iran. Some economic and social factors include high rural unemployment, livestock overgrazing and uncontrolled cutting of live tree branches with the wood used for firewood and foliage used as food for farm animals. These pruning wounds can serve as entry points for pathogens and attract insects. Important abiotic factors included extended drought, increasing air temperature and wind speed, and increased levels of airborne dust and heavy metals. Important pathogens identified in the early 2000s included Armillaria mellea and charcoal rot fungus (Biscogniauxia mediterranea). More recently, many other fungal pathogens (e.g., Discula quercina, Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, Obolarina persica, Paecilomyces formosus and Phaeoacremonium tuscanicum) and bacterial pathogens (e.g., Bacillus pumilus, Brenneria goodwinii, Gibbsiella quercinecans, Rahnella victoriana and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia) were found in association with declining oaks. Among the insects, severe oak defoliation has resulted from various Lepidoptera in the families Erebidae, Geometridae and Tortricidae. Similarly, several bark‐ and wood‐boring beetles in the families Buprestidae and Cerambycidae were reported from declining oaks, with the buprestid Agrilus hastulifer being one of the most common. It is hoped that this review will improve our understanding of the many factors involved in oak decline in Iran and promote the development of management strategies.

A population of an amphidelphic tylenchid nematode was recovered from Urmia Lake islands in association with native shrubs of the region. It had a Tylenchidae-type cloacal bursa in male and looked morphologically similar to the genera under the family Psilenchidae sensu Siddiqi, representing a new species, described and illustrated in present study as Antarctenchus urmiensis n. sp. It is characterized by the slender body at anterior region, gradually narrowing toward posterior end. Four lines in lateral fields in extremities, increasing to six at mid-body. Deirids at secretoryexcretory pore (S-E pore) level and phasmids at 38-62% of the tail. Low-expanded cephalic region having a moderately sclerotized cephalic framework, continuous with body, and not flattened dorso-ventrally. Finely annulated cuticle. Amphidial apertures porelike. Short (13-15 µm long) stylet, its conus 35-42% of the total length and three small tear-drop like knobs. Pharynx with ellipsoid metacorpus and small valve, small saccate pharyngeal bulb offset from intestine. Reproductive system didelphic-amphidelphic, vulva with no membrane or epyptigma. Tail conical, not elongate or filiform, usually slightly ventrally bent, with a sharp or blunt tip and a small indentation at dorsal side close to tip. Males with similar anterior body region and tail to those of female, tylenchoid spicules and small cloacal bursa. In molecular phylogenetic analyses using partial small and large subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU and LSU rDNA D2-D3) sequences, the new species appeared as an independent lineage between the clades of Hoplolaimina sensu Siddiqi and the clades of Atetylenchus spp. + Psilenchus spp. in the SSU phylogeny. In LSU phylogeny, it placed in a clade including representatives of Atetylenchus, Psilenchus, Amplimerlinius, Pratylenchoides, Nagelus, and Geocenamus.The currently available phylogenies and taxonomic frameworks were re-evaluated for the placement of the didelphic Tylenchidaelike genera, the overall results showing the best resolution is achieved with the family concept of Psilenchidae under Dolichodoroidea.
