Occurrence of the non-indigenous brittle star Ophiothela cf. mirabilis Verrill, 1867 (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea) in natural and anthropogenic habitats off Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract: The brittle star Ophiothela mirabilis, thought to be confined to Pacific waters, was first observed in the Atlantic in 2000. Since then, it has expanded its range north to Trinidad and Tobago and south to Paraná, Brazil. By monitoring the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil, with both recruitment plates in harbors and SCUBA diving, we were able to observe specimens of Ophiothela mirabilis in both natural and anthropogenic habitats. This presents a range extension of ~80 km south and emphasizes the importance of an… Show more

“…Colour patterns. The most common colour pattern in Brazil has been yellow-orange (Hendler et al ., 2012; Mantelatto et al ., 2016; Lawley et al ., 2018), but purple was also described in specimens from Araçá Bay (Alitto et al ., 2018). In the present study, the most common colouration patterns are orange and purple in living specimens and reddish purple, brown, cream, or white for those fixed in alcohol.…”

“…The genus Ophiothela was restricted to Pacific waters (Clark, 1976), but recently introduced populations have been described in the Atlantic (Hendler et al ., 2012; Mantelatto et al ., 2016; Araújo et al ., 2018; Lawley et al ., 2018). Since then, there has been no consensus in the identification of Ophiothela species on the Brazilian coast.…”
