Oceanic Wave Energy Conversion by a Novel Permanent Magnet Linear Generator Capable of Preventing Demagnetization

Abstract: In the conventional permanent magnet linear generators (PMLGs) used for oceanic wave energy conversion system, demagnetization could cause everlasting degradation in electrical power generation. This paper presents a new design that can be applied to various PMLGs to avoid demagnetization. To check the effectiveness of the proposed technique, a PMLG is considered which allows both the fixed and variable length of air gaps for analysis. The finite element analysis is used by using the software package ANSYS/Ans… Show more

“…Four vigorous types of the WECs are oscillating water column (OWCs) [64], point absorber [65], surface attenuator [66], and overtopping device [67]. Advanced power take-off devices for seizing OWE contain hydraulic rams which is fundamentally a water pump, hydroelectric turbines, air turbine, and linear electrical generator [68].…”

“…Although, the technology developed for the wind energy sector can serve as a blueprint for the wave sector, but it cannot be directly applied to the wave energy technology, as these are two different forms of energies, the wind and the wave energy resources, which are radically different. The continuous unsettled nature of the waves produces a fluctuating power output from the WECs, and if the LEG is deployed, the electric output voltage frequency and amplitude will be variable [5]. The performance of the power take-off (PTO) unit of the WEC, which converts the kinetic and potential energy of the oscillating gravity waves into electrical energy, depends upon the control topology used.…”

“…Zhang et al [88] changed the geometry parameters of the slot so that the effect of the Halbach PM array configuration on the electromagnetic properties of the generator and design guides were established for optimization of the key design parameters. There are also studies on how to avoid the irreversible demagnetization of magnets using the superconducting windings [57,89,90,91].…”
