Show more

“…Both show the same coccolith vari-monomorphism in coccolith-bearing cells, the only difference being the dominance of non-calcifying mucilage-covered cells in strain 162. It seems likely that all work on Ochrosphaera since Schussnig (1930Schussnig ( , 1940 is on a single species, O. neapolitana. However, Schussnig (1940) clearly observed other organisms when he created two new species, O. verrucosa and O. rovignensis.…”

“…The genus Ochrosphaera was created by Schussnig (1930) for a single species, Ochrosphaera neapolitana. Like the genus Hymenomonas, Ochrosphaera is characterised by the presence of tremaliths (vase-shaped coccoliths calcified only on the rim of the baseplate scale).…”

“…However, Schiller (1930 and Braarud (1954) consider that these species are synonymous with H. roseola. (28) Ochrosphaera verrucosa Schussnig, 1930, is here considered to be a synonym of O. neapolitana (Gayral, personal communication to RWJ, 1991). 29 (30) Papposphaera arctica has a holococcolith-bearing phase previously described as Turrisphaera arctica Manton et al (Manton et al, 1976b).…”

“…Thus, all the Ochrosphaera strains in this study fit the cell size for O. neopolitana, the type species. Ochrosphaera neapolitana was originally described using isolates collected from the coast of Naples, Italy [33]. Two additional species, O. verrucosa and O. rovignensis, were described by the same author using samples collected from the Adriatic Sea coastline in what is now Croatia [34].…”
