OCT for Examination of Cultural Heritage Objects

Abstract: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was first time reported as a tool for examination of cultural heritage objects in 2004. It is mainly used for the examination of subsurface structure of easel paintings (such as varnishes and glazes) and has also been successfully used for inspection of other types of artworks, provided that they contain layers that are permeable to the probing light. This chapter discusses the last applications of OCT in this area with an emphasis on synergy with some other noninvasive techn… Show more

“…Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) examination was conducted in the Arvedi Laboratory of Non-Invasive Diagnostics hosted in the Museo del Violino (Cremona, Italy), within the MOLAB Transnational Access-EU H2020 Project IPERION CH. The analysis was carried out with a laboratory-built high-resolution portable Spectral domain OCT (SdOCT) instrument [44][45][46]. The tomograph is equipped with a broad-band light source made up of coupled super-luminescent LEDs emitting in the band of 750-930 nm and providing 0.8 mW power at the object.…”
