Abstract: The Online Course Tool for Adaptive Learning (OCTAL) is an adaptive exercise system that customizes the progression of question topics to each student. By creating a concept dependency graph of topics in a course and modeling a student's knowledge state, the tool presents questions that test knowledge within a student's zone of proximal development. We intend OCTAL to be a formative assessment tool that is not tied to any specific course by providing language-agnostic questions on computer science concepts. Wh… Show more

“…The proposed model learns and memorizes good learning assessment activities for different learners, and accordingly provides a personalized learning sequence for other similar learners. A similar system was introduced in [5] where the assessment questions were triggered based on the expertise proved by the learner. Authors in [6] describe a different system where learning and assessment were totally adaptable based on knowledge, competences, preferences and needs of the learner.…”

“…This sort of adaptive learning pathways within a set of course materials would be the holy grail of MOOC research. Active work in this realm of data visualization and adaptive pathway creation is already underway, including the OCTAL and MOOCviz 2.0 platforms (Armendariz, Garcia, & Hardy, ; Thompson & Veeramachaneni, n.d.) This type of adaptive system gets more effective with the more data available, which means the massive MOOC courses would have the potential to generate adaptive pathways for students quickly.…”

“…The investigation into learner models primarily concentrates on theoretical research, and the components included in the learner models are comprehensive and encompass various aspects [1][2][3]. However, they are difficult to observe in tangible progress and are not very feasible.…”
