Ocular motility disturbances after glaucoma drainage device implantation for paediatric glaucoma: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: AimTo grade extraocular motility in the field of action of each extraocular muscle following superotemporal glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation in a paediatric population and to investigate which drainage device (Ahmed vs Baerveldt) yields less extraocular motility disturbance.MethodsCross-sectional study of children with a GDD implanted consecutively by a single surgeon who underwent ocular motility examination by two masked orthoptists. Ductions in the cardinal positions were graded. Ocular alignment… Show more

“…Exotropia and vertical strabismus Arq Bras Oftalmol. 2024;87(6):e2021-0338 were the most frequently observed conditions, which were attributable to both the mass effect and bleb scar that limits eye movements (65) . In the study by Vinod et al, pars plana insertion of a GDD was not associated with an increased risk of strabismus compared to anterior chamber insertion; however, the small sample size and retrospective study design were limitations of the study (51) .…”

“…Treatment of the strabismus in this setting is primarily surgical, however, glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) can induce an additional restrictive component in both children and adults [ 1 , 3 , 6 9 ]. Additionally, placement of a GDD makes adjacent rectus muscle surgery more complicated and less predictable, often requiring hang-back sutures and removal of the capsule surrounding the plate [ 2 , 7 ].…”
